SEOUL,South Korea (AP) --Riot police beat and arrested several protesters early Monday duringan illegal rally by hundreds of opponents of a beef import agreementwith the United States that has raised fears of mad cow disease inSouth Korea.

경찰기동대가 이른 아침 수백 명의 광우병 공포에 의해 미쇠고기 수입을 반대하는 시위자들을 불법 가두시위중에 폭행하면서 연행했다.

 Policedetained31 people for questioning, a police officer at the Seoul MetropolitanPolice Agency said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasnot authorized to speak to reporters and declined to comment on thepolice violence.

 Scientistsbelieve mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, spreadswhen farmers feed cattle with recycled meat and bones from infectedanimals. In humans, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatalmalady, is linked to eating meat products contaminated with thecattle disease.

과학자들은 광우병이 동물성 재활용 사료를 먹이거나, 감염된 동물의 뼈를 통해 전염된다고 생각한다. 인간 광우병의 경우 , 드물지만 치명적인 병인, 광우병에 감염된 고기를 먹음으로써 전염된다고 본다
